Meet Amir: Visidon’s Imaging Software Engineer

“I think one of the great things about working in Visidon is that you can see the USE of everything you have learned during your study years but more in a practical way.”

My name is Amir Kazemtarghi. I am an imaging software engineer at Visidon.  I got both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biomedical engineering. I worked with biometric image processing during my bachelor’s and medical image processing during my master’s.

My story with Visidon began when It was winter 2020 and I was about to finish my master’s at the University of Oulu. Meanwhile, I was in great doubt about whether I had to pursue my education and go for a PhD or I should go into the industry and gain practical experience. I have been doing academic work as far as I remember and it was a huge step for me to get a job outside the university.

Eventually, I decided to go into the industry and work with day-to-day real-life problems so that I can literally see the outcome of my work in real life. Another reason for my decision was that I wanted to do something different from what I have done so far. So, I started applying to different companies. I remember, there were not many job possibilities at the time because the pandemic was recently started and most companies stopped hiring. Right After my graduation, one of my classmates who was working in Visidon told me that they are looking for an imaging software engineer. I was kind of excited when I realized that the working area of Visidon is anything related to image/video processing solutions because everything I have ever done so far was related to image processing from the very first day when I was at university.

After applying, I got the call for an interview. The vibe during the interview was really good. I couldn’t feel any stress or anxiety. I remember HR was trying to create a calm atmosphere so that I can have a really good interview without any stress or pressure. Then, I tried to do my best and not worry or think too much about other things. Fortunately, I got the job and I was super happy because I liked the job description. It was mostly in alignment with my prior experiences. I found many good friends in Oulu. Getting this job means I didn’t need to leave them and finally I was super excited to do something new and be in a new work atmosphere.

The biggest challenge I had when I started working in Visidon was that I had to work with C++ all the time. I used to code mostly with MATLAB and python for my research and studies and there were a few times that I coded with C and C++ in laboratories and some specific courses at university. So, I only knew some basics and I was always worried about messing something up at first. I had nice colleagues and really good supervisors, though. They often helped me to cope with my new job circumstances and finish my tasks. I only had to remember not being shy and asking for help from my colleagues and supervisors whenever I needed it. They are nice and supportive enough to help me with my problems. Many times, my colleagues were so excited to solve my problems. Actually, this attitude and mentality made me feel confident which is a really important thing in your workplace in my opinion! Because if you feel confident, you will not be shy and seek help where it is needed and that will speed up the task completion and at the same time you learn so many things from others’ experiences.

“They (colleagues and supervisors) often helped me to cope with my new job circumstances and finish my tasks. I only had to remember not being shy and asking for help from my colleagues and supervisors whenever I needed it.”

Apart from that, my co-workers here are so energetic, cool, and funny. We have so many exciting things to do during our break time at the company like pool tournaments, ping pong tournaments and so many different kinds of challenges (EURO football prediction tournament, group contest challenge, and so on). More importantly, we have a weekly sport-session where we play futsal/volleyball together and we usually witnessed so many funny scenes and great moments!

I have had various types of tasks at Visidon. At first, one of my colleagues and I were supposed to develop a newer version of real-time object tracker software for mobile phones and cameras. I also had to spend time handling different issues in our core modules. Currently, I am working on implementing our software products on one type of DSP accelerator so that they can be run so much faster on specific hardware.

“There is no such thing as competition in the company. You can see ‘all for one, one for all’ and I think that is a necessity of making a workplace environment peaceful, healthy, and productive.”

I think one of the great things about working in Visidon is that you can see the USE of everything you have learned during your study years but more in a practical way. Besides that, incredible teamwork and collaboration are other things you can feel in Visidon. It means that Everyone here willingly helps others with their problems. There is no such thing as competition in the company. You can see “all for one, one for all” and I think that is a necessity of making a workplace environment peaceful, healthy, and productive.
