I am Jyrki, and I work as an AI engineer at Visidon. I started at the company nine months ago as a thesis worker and after my graduation, I became a full-time employee. While studying Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Oulu, I found deep learning to be the most captivating subject in the field. It was definitely something I could envision as a long-term career.

When the time came to search for a place to do my thesis, I was a little bit worried. Since I did not have any relevant work experience prior to joining Visidon, I was uncertain that I would be able to find a position where I could work on a thesis subject I actually found interesting. Fortunately, my worries were unfounded. Visidon had posted a deep learning related task online, where candidates could show their skills. After submitting the task, the rest of the hiring process was fast and straightforward.

I started working on my Master’s thesis from day one. The goal was to optimize the training dataset for image denoising with convolutional neural networks. Basically I was trying to figure out how many different colors and textures the network should have in the limited training set in order to work well in real-world scenarios. The topic was definitely not easy, but I enjoyed the challenge. The courses I attended throughout my university studies only offered a surface-level exposure to the many possibilities of machine learning. The thesis subject on the other hand was a unique problem in a specific field of deep learning. This allowed me to delve a lot deeper into the intricacies of neural networks. I was given free rein on how to approach the problem, which made the work and the end result that much more rewarding.

I was able to allocate all of my working hours towards my thesis. I really appreciated that, since not only did it allow me to graduate faster, but it made the whole thesis process a lot more effortless. I could only focus on learning and mastering all of the new things instead of trying to make a finished product as fast as possible. After completing the thesis, it was an easy decision to stay here as a full-time employee.

One of the best aspects of working at Visidon is the environment. The atmosphere here has been very welcoming at the get-go. People have been happy to help and discuss about new ways to approach the problems. The hierarchy is low level, and I have had real input on what kind of work tasks I get to do. Some free-time activities are regularly organized, of which my favorite has been our weekly sports session, where we usually play either floorball or futsal.
